Old and new schoolyards were the topic of the presentation “Beyond old schoolyards” by LEA project manager Dr. Petra R. Moog at the European conference “Erasmus + green mobility + green schools” in Potsdam in May 2022.
Using the example of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, the school construction consultant showed how “classic” schoolyards with a lot of concrete and few design options differ from “green” yards and how this affects the C02 balance. If grass or meadow is planted in the schoolyard, several tons of carbon dioxide can be saved per year.
1 hectare of meadow transforms 6 tons of CO2 per year.
Dr. Petra R. Moog
Extrapolated to Europe, this means a C02 consumption of almost 183 tons.
The conference was held in Potsdam, Germany, May 4-6, 2022. 210 people from 23 nations participated. They all come from the school sector and discussed ideas on how to implement sustainable education in schools. In workshops and an exhibition, 57 projects on environmental and climate protection were presented.
The goal of the joint Green Deal is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
